The department of Psychiatry was established in 2010. Since then it has been providing psychiatric services to patients from different parts of Thiruvarur and neighboring districts.

1)We are providing both inpatient and outpatient services on all days of the week. The services include clinical assessment, psychotherapy, family counselling, administering ECT for indicated patients and HDU

2) Separate inpatient and outpatient Deaddiction services to cater patients suffering from substance abuse is available

3) We are running a Special Clinic for Geriatric Patients. Child and Adolescent clinics are conducted every week. Antenatal and Postnatal counselling is provided to mothers .

4) Clinical and Theory classes for Medical Students are conducted. We have conducted awareness programmes for students highlighting mental health issues. A CME programme was organized in collaboration with the Indian Psychiatric Society, South Zonal Branch in Thanjavur in which over 150 delegates from all the southern states participated.

6)We are providing liaison and counselling services to patients admitted in other departments .

7)Medico legal services are provided to patients referred from judiciary.

8)We also coordinate with district administrators in providing outreach services, issuing certificates, handling homeless mentally I’ll patients and assisting them in providing support.

9)A Tele counselling helpline for medical and paramedical students MaNaM is functioning round the clock to help them with their mental health issues.

10)Training for Primary health center medical officers &staff with collaboration of DMHP.
