Family Adoption Programme:

“Family adoption program” which was introduced by Indian Medical council was inaugurated successfully in Government Thiruvarur medical College by our beloved Dean. Dr.  Joseph Raj sir, in presence of our RMO sir Dr. Ramachandran, Vice Principal Dr. Uma.

This program was organised by the  Department of Community medicine under Dr. Madhankumar ,and his team  Dr. Parameshwary , Dr. Jeevapriya , Dr.Sharmila, Dr. Gowtham, along with other Department heads and Professors of first year MBBS.

The first year students were oriented about the programme using small group discussion with their mentors and CRMIs.  Everyone in their group discussed their queries in SGD and in Whats app groups. Everyone was motivated to begin their role as Community physician.

On 13/4/2023, Under the guidance of Faculties and CRMIs of Department of community medicine, the first year MBBS students visited Ammaiappan village 5 kms away from Thiruvarur and adopted 5 families each. Hence, 500 families were adopted through this program.

The families adopted through this program would be monitored by the medical students regularly throughout their UG course under the guidance of the respective mentors (Assistant Professors).

By this programme our medical students are going to identify the needs of the people and provide various health services such as screening for NCDs, Identifying any high risk in pregnant mother or in any under five children, Early detection of Malnutrition in Children,  providing health education to the family members and creating awareness about endemic diseases ( Malaria, Dengue, Tuberculosis, Chickengunya), early detection of communicable and non communicable diseases, recommending appropriate diagnostics and treatment , provision of first aid care on emergencies like burns or poisonings, and creating awareness about the health welfare programmes of the Tamil Nadu government.

By working as a member of the family they themselves  become familiar with the health of the family and they will bring a small change in their adopted family which can create huge impact in the upliftment of rural health services.
