The Department of Ophthalmology, Government Thiruvarur medical College, caters to the ophthalmic needs of the people of the delta district of Tamilnadu mainly, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal and Mayiladuthurai.

We make a holistic approach for the well being of the patients and imparting knowledge and skills to the students.

Our department is headed by one Professor, one Associate professor, two Assistant professors and one Senior resident as per NMC norms.

Nearly around 100 patients are attending our outpatient department and 20-25 inpatients are getting treatment daily and the numbers are ever increasing.

Apart from the regular op procedure we routinely do speciality clinic works.

Glaucoma Clinic

Here we do glaucoma screening for all the patients coming to the OPD above the age of 40.

We do intraocular pressure measurement, visual field analysis, and angle of the anterior chamber evaluation and initiate medical management.

For needed patients we do YAG peripheral iridotomy and antiglaucoma surgeries.

Retina clinic

Nearly 75-100 patients per week are evaluated for retinal diseases.

We do direct ophthalmoscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, 90D examination, ultrasound B scan examination.

We also do diabetic retinopathy screening, fundus fluorescein angiography and panretinal photocoagulation procedures.

We also carry out retinopathy of prematurity evaluation for new born babies referred from the Paediatric department and neighbouring districts.

Cornea clinic and eye bank

We routinely do corneal diseases evaluation and we have a registered eye bank. Eyes are harvested whenever possible and corneal transplantation is done for needed patients.

Paediatric ophthalmology

We have District early intervention centre(DEIC) in our institution and we receive children referred for the diseases like congenital cataract and we are doing surgeries for them.

Community outreach program

Screening camps are conducted regularly in nearby villages by PHCs. Patients identified with cataract, glaucoma, retina and cornea problems are brought to our department for further management.

Nearly 2400 cataract surgeries per year are being done in our institution.

In our state, we are in the 6th place among the 38 districts in cataract surgeries.

Academic activities

We are equipped with committed and dedicated faculties who excel in teaching undergraduate students and they are on par with any other reputed institutions.

We have well equipped OP cabin, clinical demonstration rooms, spacious classrooms and audiovisual aids.

Elective postings for students and CRMI

In order to impart basic clinical and technical skills, students are given elective postings as per NMC norms. To enhance their learning skills, we regularly conduct group discussions, symposium, quiz programmes, topic and poster presentations.
