Department of Cardiology was started in the year 2016 with outpatient services on a twice weekly basis. About 15000 new cases are being treated annually.
Echocardiogram is being done on four days a week with an annual census of 18000 patients. Treadmill test is being done on two days in a week. Fully equipped Coronary care unit runs 24 x 7 treating 40 Myocardial infarction cases per month.
Under Rashtriya bal swasthya Karyakram, School children are screened and wards with cardiac defects are referred in the earlier stages itself. This department being the referral centre for Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagappattinam districts and Union Territory of Karaikal handles boundless high cardiac risk pregnant ladies with low Maternal Mortality.
On the education front, the department holds the intake of 20 B.Sc., Cardiac technology students annually. With the cardiac catheterization lab on pipeline, this Department strives to serve the poor and marginalised people of these backward districts.
