Respiratory Medicine is one of the most integral parts of Modern Medicine and Healthcare. In Thiruvarur Medical College, we have the department of Respiratory Medicine/Pulmonology which aims to treat multiple complex pulmonary challenges that involve lungs and breathing. The Department aims at providing some of the most diverse and comprehensive pulmonary and critical care for our patients. We excel in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of Tuberculosis, be it a simple drug sensitive TB or complex Drug resistant TB.

Facilities at Department of Respiratory Medicine:

• We have the pulmonology OPD running daily which caters wide range of respiratory ailments
• We have In-patient ward with 12 beds to admit and treat severely ill patients for respiratory care
• The respiratory medicine department at Thiruvarur Medical College is the designated Drug Resistant TB (DRTB) centre for Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal districts, where all MDR and XDR patients are admitted and treated. We have a special 6 bedded isolated MDR Ward for the same.
• We provide F-75 TB diet for all in-patients suffering from Tuberculosis along with high protein TB diet.
• We have the computerised Spirometry machine for the diagnosis of the two major respiratory diseases, Bronchial Asthma and COPD.
• The department has the most advanced Flexible Fibro Optic Bronchoscope, used in the diagnosis and treatment of various lung pathologies like lung mass, infection, foreign body removal and lung collapse.
