To meet the growing demands of meritorious students in the backward areas of the state for professional medical courses, Muthamizh Arignar Dr M. Karunanithi, Chief Minister of Tamilnadu announced in the budget for 2007-2008 presented in the Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly that a Government medical college will be established at Thiruvarur. With immediate effort, actions were taken and construction work started. In 2010, Medical council of India gave permission to start Medical College with MBBS intake of 100 students, Sitting Chief Minister “Kalaignar Dr. M. Karunanithi” inaugurated the institution by cutting the ribbon by his golden hands, and then the institution started educational service to the society. In 2020, Govt. Thiruvarur Medical College promoted as Postgraduate institution and 6 Postgraduate broad speciality courses were started after getting permission from Medical Council of India with total intake of 32 PG seats. From 2022 onwards, M. D. Emergency Medicine course introduced as a seventh Postgraduate course of Govt. Thiruvarur Medical College. Apart from Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical courses, Govt. Thiruvarur Medical College facilitate to study undergraduate allied health science courses and various diploma and certificate courses in paramedical disciplines. Overall, around 1100 students are studying in the campus at Government Thiruvarur Medical College.
